Himachal Pradesh Landslides and Floods, July 10, 2023
Heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh on July 10, 2023, triggered landslides and flash floods, causing widespread damage and loss of life. The worst-hit areas were the districts of Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, and Chamba.
Landslides
Landslides were reported in several areas, including Madholi village in Shimla district, Kakiyan tehsil in Chamba district, and Lankabeker village in Kullu district. In Madholi village, three people were killed when a landslide hit their house. In Kakiyan tehsil, one person was buried in a landslide. And in Lankabeker village, a woman was killed when a landslide swept away her house.
Flash Floods
Flash floods were also reported in several areas, including Manali, Kullu, Kinnaur, and Chamba. In Manali, a flash flood swept away several shops and vehicles. In Kullu, a flash flood washed away a bridge, cutting off a road connecting the district headquarters to other parts of the state. And in Chamba, a flash flood damaged several houses and crops.
Damage and Loss of Life
The landslides and flash floods have caused widespread damage to property and infrastructure. Several houses, roads, bridges, and power lines have been damaged or destroyed. And at least five people have been killed.
Relief Efforts
The state government has deployed rescue teams to the affected areas. And the Indian Army has also been called in to help with the relief efforts. The state government has also announced compensation for the families of those who have been killed or injured.
Outlook
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rains in the coming days. This means that the risk of landslides and flash floods remains high. The state government has urged people to stay safe and to avoid traveling to the affected areas.
